Businesses can now register online to work on the Sydney Tar Ponds cleanup project. The Sydney Tar Ponds Agency launched its online business directory today, March 9. It will serve as a single point of contact for firms that hope to take part in the cleanup and need information on Cape Breton suppliers of goods and services. “We believe the cleanup offers a great opportunity to enhance Cape Breton’s already transforming economy through job creation, skills development, knowledge transfer, and capacity building for future export potential,” said Frank Potter, acting CEO of the Sydney Tar Ponds Agency. “The online directory is a great opportunity for local business owners and operators to promote their products and services.” The directory is open to all businesses throughout Cape Breton and there is no cost to register. The directory is located on the Tar Ponds website, www.tarpondscleanup.ca , where business owners can register their firms, in just a few minutes. The directory will be promoted as the one-stop shop where contractors and consultants can find Cape Breton businesses to partner with. Other agency initiatives to maximize local benefits include business information sessions which will fully explain tendering procedures and a business capacity study of the labour and supplies requirements of the cleanup. The study will also identify areas where local service provision and additional skills development for workers might be improved. The mission of the Sydney Tar Ponds Agency is to clean up the Tar Ponds and Coke Ovens in a manner that is safe and effective, while providing the maximum possible benefit to the local economy.
