Murray to quit if baby comes early

first_imgAndy Murray will leave the Australian Open early if his wife goes into labour prematurely.Kim Sears isn’t expecting until mid-February, but Murray told the Daily Mail newspaper that he’s prepared to withdraw from the first major of the year if she goes into labour early.”I’d go home. For sure, yes,” Murray said in yesterday’s edition. “I want to make sure at the beginning I am there as much as I can be to try and help out, just be there for whatever is really required of me.”The Australian Open, where Murray has reached the final four times but never won, runs from January 18-31.Regardless of his result, Murray said he’s taking off all of February and won’t play again until the first round of the Davis Cup in early March at home against Japan. Britain will be defending the trophy that Murray led them to last month. The second-ranked Murray said he is looking forward to becoming a father.”I am excited about that,” he said. “People have asked me, ‘Do you think it will be a distraction?’ It might be a distraction, but it’s a good distraction.”It’s actually not good to all the time be just concentrating on tennis and your training all of the time. It is important … when you finish on the practice court, be able to just go away and be with your friends and your family.”Murray also reunited with coach Amelie Mauresmo and her first child Aaron in Dubai this week. Mauresmo gave birth in August and Murray hadn’t seen her since Wimbledon in July.”I really enjoy working with her,” he said. “The last six months not seeing her, it’s just nice to have her back as part of the team, and get that continuity going again.”last_img read more

Jennifer Ellison-Brown: Major causes and prevention of sports-related injuries

first_imgSport is a dynamic activity. When we play, we push our bodies to the limit, and this can lead to injury. Sometimes, of course, even when all precautions and great care have been taken, parts of the body can be injured either through sudden impact, movement or overuse. If such injuries keep occurring, more lasting damage can occur. Injuries can also occur because of environmental factors such as equipment, playing surfaces and weather conditions. Injuries can be classed as: – Accidental injuries (due to violence or the environment) – Overuse injuries – Chronic Injuries – Accidental injuries Accidental injuries are those that happen when they are least expected and can be caused by internal and external forces. Internal force is extra strain on the body parts when performance is at our highest level. A sudden stretch or twist can strain or tear muscles, tendons or ligament. Example: Sprinters can tear a hamstring in a race, footballers get groin strain through stretching or knee ligament damage from twisting. External forces come from outside and has to do with direct contact or violence from another player. Another external force is the environment. Injuries caused by violence are due to direct contact between players or equipment. Many sports have violent contact between opponents which may result in fractures, dislocations, sprains and bruises. They may also be caused by being hit by equipment such as a bat, ball, sticks or rackets. Breaking the rules can lead to violent injury. The environment can lead to injury due to facilities. For example, uneven playing surfaces can cause a player to trip and land heavily on the playing surface, or a player may collide with the goalpost. The weather conditions may cause dehydration, heat exhaustion and then heat stroke due to extreme heat and hypothermia due to extreme cold conditions. Never come back too soon after an injury before you know you are ready. Do not allow yourself to be pressured into performing before you are properly recovered. This will prevent further damage to the injured body part. ENOUGH REST AND RECOVERY PLAYING SURFACES Impatience at times causes players to ignore the need for a good warm-up before the start of an activity and a gentle cool-down at the end. A warm-up prepares the mind and body for the activity and helps reduce the risk of injury. It should involve a gradual increase in the heart rate and breathing rate. Stretching exercises are also important. A cool-down reverses the warm-up process and brings the mind and body back to a relaxed state. It helps to begin repaying of oxygen debt by maintaining an increased blood flow to the muscles to deliver oxygen to the tissue and remove lactic acid. PREVENTING SPORT INJURIES COOL DOWN The use of correct equipment for the activity and wearing the correct clothing can avoid injury. Protection for ankle, knees, hips and back by wearing the correct footwear and clothing must be comfortable for the environment. Equipment should be approved and safe. Activities should always be properly supervised with first aid equipment and material available. Safe practice and safety rules must be adhered to. The playing surface should always be safe and in appropriate condition. CORRECT PREPARATION Sometimes there is not much that can be done to prevent an injury from happening. However, it helps if training is progressive and safe, with proper rest periods, proper conditioning of the body and the right mental attitude. Those factors are important in reducing the risk. Always be properly prepared for the activity. The right skills, strategies, frame of mind and body condition to perform well must be developed. Not knowing what to do cause mistakes and injuries. These are caused by using a part of the body repeatedly over a long period of time. These injuries produce pain and inflammation. Common overuse injuries include ‘tennis or golf elbows’, ‘Shin splints’, ‘cricketer’s shoulder’, ‘blisters and calluses caused by gripping equipment tightly during activity. Some overuse injuries are caused by incorrect technique. All injuries must be treated at once. If they are placed under stress before they are healed, they will get worse. If this continues, a chronic injury will develop and will be difficult to heal. Chronic injury can lead to permanent damage. Lack of fitness and lack of knowledge of the rules of the sport can also cause injuries. OVERUSE INJURIES CORRECT EQUIPMENT AND CORRECT WARM-UP ANDlast_img read more

A president’s plea to Antonio

first_img The United States extended the status to about 250,000 Salvadorans in 2001 after a massive earthquake. Marie Sebrechts, a spokeswoman for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, said she couldn’t comment on the status of Saca’s latest request because she had not seen it. It’s unclear how many Salvadorans live in the United States, legally or otherwise. The U.S. Census of 2000 estimates 600,000, but Salvadoran officials say the real number is much higher. Large pockets live throughout California. Many work as farm laborers or in other low-paying jobs. Saca said he didn’t have a timetable for pulling about Salvadoran 400 troops out of Iraq, saying first the armed forces in the Middle Eastern country had to be capable of providing security. “After all the hard work there, it doesn’t make sense to get up and leave,” Saca said. Most Latin American governments opposed the war. Only Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic sent troops or police to Iraq. Salvadorans are the only ones still there. Saca said he would attend a fundraiser in Los Angeles tonight for a children’s hospital and then return to El Salvador.160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Salvadoran President Tony Saca urged Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Friday to support national immigration reform, saying resolving the status of undocumented workers would benefit the United States. “Many of the people being deported are good, taxpaying people who are contributing to this country,” Saca told reporters after meeting with Villaraigosa for an hour at a downtown hotel. “Twelve million or 14 million illegals (in the United States), that’s the reality here.” Saca said the mayor “made it clear he understood the concerns,” but didn’t elaborate. Villaraigosa, a Democrat and Los Angeles’ first Latino mayor in more than 130 years, did not speak with reporters. Calls to his office seeking comment late Friday were not immediately returned. Minister Dames Commends New RBDFBAIC Programme

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Related Items: Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp#Bahamas, October 18, 2017 – Nassau – Minister of National Security the Hon. Marvin Dames said, on October 16, 2017 that the first Transitional Entrepreneurial Training Seminar Between The Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) and Bahamas Agricultural and Industrial Corporation (BAIC) provided an outlet for senior members of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force to redirect their expertise.“Using their professional background, they will be able to focus on business development with the technical assistance of BAIC experts which all bodes well for the economic development of our nation,” Minister Dames said, during the official opening of the entrepreneurial programme, held at BAIC, in the Soldier Road Industrial Park. Also taking park in the ceremony were RBDF Commodore Tellis Bethel; BAIC Executive Chairman Miriam Emmanuel, MP; BAIC General Manager Troy Sampson; senior Government Officials, BAIC staff members; RBDF Executives, Officers, Warrant Officers and Non-commissioned Officers; and seminar participants.Minister Dames noted that he was pleased to be associated with “this innovative partnership” between the RBDF and BAIC and, therefore, commended all concerned for their visionary leadership and collaboration in making the programme a reality.“I am certain that the Member of Parliament for MICAL would agree that this programme fits well into BAIC’s mantra of ‘Growing.   Partnering. Empowering’; and with the Defence Force’s motto of ‘Guard Our Heritage’,” Minister Dames said.“I understand that this joint venture was an idea that was initially presented to the General Manager at BAIC, Mr. Troy Sampson, by Commodore Tellis Bethel,” Minister Dames pointed out.   “Commodore Bethel has advised me that Mr. Sampson and his team welcomed and developed the idea without hesitation.   I applaud both you and the teams that supported you in this joint venture.”Minister Dames stated that the topics and activities that would be covered during the seminar were “impressive.”“They include local stock market investing, venture capital, government and private funding, tours of industrial parks and farms, and much more,” he said.Minister Dames added that the more than 30 men and women taking part in the pilot programme had all served over 25 years in the Defence Force and will more than likely be exploring those areas of business in which they would have developed some degree of skill.“I am made to understand that most, if not all, of you would have worked in at least two or more departments during your tenure in the Defence Force, thereby adding to your overall ability to brainstorm and implement unique solutions through creative enterprise,” he said.   “In the business arena, your sense of discipline, commitment, hard work and responsibility are vital keys to your success.”Minister Dames said that it should be mentioned that the entrepreneurial programme falls under the RBDF’s Operation Transformation, which is one of five strategic goals that have been set for the organization.“Operation Transformation, I am advised, aims to invest in the leadership, management and supervisory skills of members of the Defence Force, as well as the development of their character, and their professional and vocational skills,” he noted.   “This initiative therefore makes it possible for Defence Force members to fulfill their vision of setting the standard of excellence in leadership, integrity and achievement in guarding their heritage.”The entrepreneurial seminar was, therefore, a part of a greater undertaking, Minister Dames stated.“I urge you to ask questions, gain as much insight as you can into the business world, develop your business plans, and take full advantage of this wonderful opportunity for personal advancement,” he said.Minister Dames said that he was also made to understand that, as a pilot programme, the seminar allowed for constructive feedback, which would be directed towards “constant improvement and expansion” for future participants in what is intended to be an ongoing programme.“It should be noted that the initial launch of this programme was slated to begin nearly a year ago but had to be rescheduled due to the passage of Hurricane Matthew then and Hurricane Irma earlier this year,” Minister Dames pointed out.   “Defence Force participants were subsequently called off to safeguard the Bahamian public and to provide disaster relief assistance.”“Nevertheless, time and opportunity have reemerged to permit the programme to resume,” he added.   “The experiences along the journey are practical reminders that the road to success is filled with many obstacles; however, if we keep pressing forward, upward, onward and together, eventually we will succeed.”To the seminar participants, Minister Dames reiterated that they were being presented with an “incredible opportunity.”“It is my hope that you maximize the use of the opportunities being made available to you for the successful development of your future dreams,” he said.   “I thank you and congratulate you on another major milestone for the Defence Force and I wish you all the best of success.”By: Eric Rose (BIS)Photo caption: Minister of National Security the Hon. Youve Decided to Implement a Paywall Now What

first_imgInstituting a paid subscription model online is frankly unwise unless you’re focused on customer experience feedback. It is that simple. So many media companies are experiencing the same evolution: declining traditional ad revenue, clients becoming their own media brands, influencers becoming advertiser darlings and a business model that requires holding on for dear life to dreams of the past. What’s the answer? Gated premium content? Our industry is buzzing with conference programs, consultants and articles focused on media companies’ unique position to migrate into “all-access” paid subscriptions. Many media companies are enthusiastic about the potential revenue stream, but don’t fully understand the significant shift in thinking that is required. For example, the shift means you can no longer look at your subscribers as a volume target focused on satisfying advertisers and giving confidence to your ad sales team. Instead, you need to look at transitioning them into “membership” within your brand’s unique association. This requires active communication that will go in the face of the old school thinking of, “We don’t need to ask anyone what is going on in the industry, our publication sets what is going on in the industry.” In this model, “members” need to understand the benefits of their investment and be confident that for every one dollar of a subscription investment, they will gain back three in privileged knowledge, access and professional authority. The only way to satisfy paid subscribers—and expand that base—is through a two-way channel of communication. They need to know the media resource is listening. Now is the time, therefore, to learn from some of the most successful membership associations about effective member retention and expansion tools if you wish to flourish in this paid landscape.Listening, in this case, consists of a direct outreach effort by your team combined with a significant focus placed on subscriber research. To be clear, this is more than just a readership study. In this case, an ongoing, “forever open” study, enabling subscribers to provide insights when they want to, using the device(s) and mediums of their choice. Here’s a rundown of some essential requirements for success:1. NPS (Net Promoter Score): This simple question is essential to member retention as your success will be dependent on converting “ambivalent” subscribers to “promoters.” You ask a single question, such as: “On a scale of 0–10, how likely are you to recommend this website to your colleagues?” One simple number choice will identify your “promoters” (9 or 10), neutrals (7 or 8) and “detractors” (0-6).Now you can take action by addressing the concerns of the “detractors” to encourage renewal of their subscription.  “Promoters” are then leveraged to expand your paid subscription opportunity and help build your business. Doing this tracking quarterly, since it is only one question, will allow everyone on your team to see the positive and negative momentum of your strategy. This is more important than who you choose as a paywall vendor. It is critical to the relationship you must have with your subscribers—current, future and returning.2. Ask paid subscribers about the topics they care about the most, and how satisfied they are with what you are providing. This will map a content plan down to demographic and regional interests allowing content creators the opportunity to expand efforts on what is most important, identifying information needs not being satisfied, as well as eliminate activities that are of the lowest importance. With so many demands, understanding what to emphasize and what to reject is critical.3. Analysis of subscriber verbatim comments: The best CX survey platforms can aggregate keywords and align them with levels of satisfaction. If the survey remains open and is ongoing, it will provide essential focus points for subscriber satisfaction, renewal and outreach. Aligning “Price,” “News,” “Features,” “Video,” “White Papers,” “Events,” etc. with satisfaction will create an effective growth-map for your business.4. Heat maps: Some CX survey platforms enable you to predict subscribers’ reactions to promotions, offerings, advertising and more, thus providing direction before even conducting A/B testing.5. Ask for your members’ needs and fulfill them. Throw away the “people won’t buy what you give away for free” thinking and replace it with “people will always buy information that provides them a competitive advantage in their career, company, home and interests.” The key here is staying on top of what that “information” need is, as it is forever evolving.6. Marketing Automation and Inbound Marketing should be vital investments in your strategy, but before you invest a moment in these efforts, like the paywall vendor, ask your audience what will motivate them to action. Again, these triggers will be identified through an active CX survey effort. What makes a great CX survey platform? Byron Zanopoulo, managing director of Signet’s Sibyl Surveys, says he “focuses on flexibility and ease of reporting. Every organization has its own specific needs in data collection and reporting. Specific to ‘Subscriber Experience’ research for media brands using a paywall, this means having the ability to collect data unobtrusively through all touchpoints in all mediums and push the analysis and reports to those obsessed with the continual delivery of the most valued content.”We no longer drive onto unknown roads without a reliable GPS. Entering into a paywall subscription strategy is no different. It requires robust, ongoing research into customer satisfaction for direction. Too many of your peers have gotten lost driving unexplored roads because they believed they alone knew better. Even companies that reject paywalls because they have tried it and believe it can’t be done successfully may not have used a listening tool. Are you listening?last_img read more

South India is near Qutab Minar

first_imgThere is much more to south India than the regular idli, dosa and sambhar. The art and craft from the region, for instance, is unknown to many in the northern parts of India. Isha Utsav, a cultural festival, might just bridge that gap. The fair gives Delhi a glimpse of south Indian art, crafts and textiles. ‘The 12 day long exhibition features specially designed crafts from rural India, organic food, daily meditation sessions and live music’ said Anubhav Nath, owner, 1AQ, where the exhibition is being held. Testing Your Site

first_img Not long ago, A/B testing was solely available to large companies–it was time-consuming, expensive and required much IT help. But now, many companies offer hosted testing and optimization services affordable to smaller businesses. That’s good news for e-tailers seeking to improve their sites. A/B testing (aka A/B split testing) allows you to test two versions of your website. You can measure how customers respond to both versions and then optimize the site based on that information. Kefta, Offermatica and Optimost are three leading companies that offer A/B testing; services run about $10,000 per month.RingCentral Inc. in San Mateo, California, is one growing e-tailer that’s had success with A/B testing. The multimillion-dollar telecommunications firm targets small businesses and sells its services exclusively online. Last summer, the company worked with Offermatica to run some A/B tests with the goal of boosting the percentage of visitors signing up for its services.RingCentral tested various elements of its site, including the home page. Two versions were prepared: one with a laundry list of features–more graphics, links to a user guide and FAQs–and one with a detailed description of the benefits of working with RingCentral. RingCentral learned that the page with more links to additional information led more people to the sign-up page. After changing the site accordingly, the 35-employee company saw a 46 percent increase in overall sales by year-end. “Thousands of people look at our site each day, and we have many ways we can present information to them,” says Vlad Shmunis, RingCentral’s 45-year-old founder. “A/B testing lets the public vote–basically with their wallets.”To be effective, A/B testing should be ongoing. Some additional tips from Offermatica CEO Matthew Roche:1. Run tests on the registration or shopping cart page. Says Roche, “Improving these areas generally provides the greatest impact on the bottom line.”2. Focus on big elements. Instead of testing text color or font size, says Roche, focus on areas such as product, pricing, primary copy, images, offers and calls to action.3. Test heavily trafficked campaigns in two weeks or less. Says Roche, “This creates better answers fast.” 2 min read This story appears in the April 2006 issue of Entrepreneur.
