first_imgThe Donegal Independent county councillor who set down a motion calling on the Government to abolish water charges says blocking water meters and other protests is not the answer.Councillor Frank McBrearty said people must stand firm if they are serious about not paying for their water and to ht the Government where it hurts – in their pockets. In a statement to Donegal Daily, Cllr McBrearty said Irish Water is a utility company and the reality is that when a utility company is owed money it will follow people until they recuperate what they are owed. “The confusion and fear out there among the public in having to pay more has to stop as we can’t pay anymore and this is why I advocate that every household in Donegal not to pay their water charges as this will force the Government to abolish them.“I am asking people to think long and hard about non payment and what it really means. If you can’t afford to pay for something you can’t pay or as some people say you can’t take blood out of a stone.Cllr Frank McBrearty“We must not deflect away from the boycott and in my opinion the distraction of other events such as the protests at the installation of water metres are not helping. The campaign is not about water meters or Irish Water, it is about the taxation of our natural resource of water, which belongs to us the Irish people.“If people want to really protest then they should join me in Dublin on the 10th December with the many others that will be there. Anyone who is unsure or confused about their rights concerning water charges or have any questions why I have taken this stance can get my contact details from Donegal County Council,” he said. The Raphoe councillor’s motion calling on Donegal County Council to pass a resolution calling on the Government to abolish water charges on Residential homes and that the Government fully commits to holding a referendum to not privatise our natural resource of water, which belongs to the Irish people received huge support. Advertisement Cllr McBrearty described it as a historic day.“I thought long and hard about the wording of this very important Motion due to the imminent crises of water charges facing every household in Donegal in the New Year. “The first battle we have to win in this unfair war, is the abolishment of water charges and this is why I chose the words very carefully in my motion to abolish water charges.“Cllr Ciaran Brogan, who is the party whip for Fianna Fail, requested me to amend my motion and to insert abolish Irish Water. I had no problem with Cllr Brogan putting this to the members if he so wished.“I objected to my motion being amended because I felt it was a deflection away from the real issue and why I requested the special meeting in the first place, which is every household in the country is facing huge bills for water in 2015.“We, the Irish people have endured enough because of the failure of politicians and our Governments over many decades and we cannot pay anymore for their mistakes. We the people will win this campaign to abolish water charges if we all stand together and not pay them.“If this government truly represents us, then they will abolish water charges. Local government is where democracy begins and the elected members of Donegal County Council, who have a clear mandate to represent the people of the county at local government level have spoken on behalf of the people who elected them in May of this year, and said “we want water charges abolished”. “I believe that the public are smart enough to know that we have not got the power to abolish Irish water and that if this is to happen it can only happen at National level.”He added that political parties should now clearly state their positions on Irish Water and where they stand on abolishing it.“It is my firm belief that local authorities across the country should never have lost the responsibility for our water services but the reality is that Irish Water is probably here to stay and this is why I have called on the Government to not privatise what belongs to the Irish people.”“People power is the ultimate weapon in this fight for Justice and it is a fight for Social Justice, remember Nelson Mandelas fight for freedom and the words of Martin Luther King who said “A threat to justice anywhere is a threat to Justice everywhere”. first_imgAustralia were looking to reach their first Davis Cup Australia were looking to reach their first Davis Cup final since winning the trophy for a 28th time in 2003, Australian captain Wally Masur had hinted yesterday he was thinking of throwing veteran Lleyton Hewitt in against the two-time Grand Slam winner to see if the former world number one could deliver a famous victory. However, he opted to keep faith with world number 23 Tomic, who had delivered success in his opening singles encounter with Dan Evans on Friday. Murray opened the tie with an ace and it set the tone for the early part of the set as some incredible returns saw him break Tomic in the fourth game. Murray survived one break point as he was serving for the set at 5-3, but a double fault followed by an unforced error allowed Tomic to break back. However, Murray recovered and with Tomic serving to send the set into a tie-break, the Brit found himself with three set points. The 22-year-old Australian saved the first two but a brilliant drop shot left Tomic stranded and sealed the first set for Murray. The two-time Grand Slam winner at times appeared unplayable in the second set. After breaking the Tomic serve early on, Murray held his service game to love to seal the second set 6-3. With the finishing line in sight, Murray found some extra reserves to step up a gear in the third set and twice broke Tomic to serve for the match with his opponent sending a return wide to seal the win and send the home crowd wide. The bowling unit is looking more confident. We have added three spinners. The leggie coming in for Patel. Jadhav to play instead of KL Rahul. 15.30 IST: Toss! Royal Challengers Bangalore opt to bat against Gujarat Lions.  advertisement15.15 IST: We’re 15 minutes away from the big clash between Suresh Raina’s men and Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore. The clash looks to be a mouth-watering one as both sides have big-hitters in their ranks. Preview: Gujarat Lions will aim to bounce back from Thursday’s 10-wicket thrashing when they face Royal Challengers Bangalore in an Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium here on Sunday.Sunrisers Hyderabad halted Gujarat’s three-match winning run with a crushing win in which they completely outplayed the hosts. And the Suresh Raina-led Gujarat Lions believe that was a poor day in the office and they need to come out all guns blazing against a RCB side that is coming off a confident triumph over Rising Pune Supergiants.Despite the loss to Hyderabad, Gujarat are second in the league points table, while Bangalore are one place behind them with two wins from four games.Gujarat failed to find a hero barring captain Suresh Raina, who scored 70 on that night. And with the left-hander’s knock, the management must be feeling relaxed as he ended a run of under-performance.All eyes will be on in-form Australian opening batsman Aaron Finch, who has has scores of 74, 50 and 67 not out respectively in the three matches so far before a duck against Hyderabad. His opening partner, retired New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum hasn’t really fired yet, barring a 49 against Pune and he will be keen to make an impact as West Indian Dwayne Smith is waiting for his chance.Other batsmen in the team are wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik and all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo and James Faulkner.Gujarat’s bowling is also strong and has delivered keeping its reputations in tact. Medium pacers Praveen Kumar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Dale Steyn, Bravo and Faulkner have been complemented well by spinners in the form of Shadab Jakati and Praveen Tambe. However, they should expect another tough day as they will be up against a RCB side that is full of batting stars. Led by Indian superstar Virat Kohli, who is in his peak form having scored 75, 79, 33 and 80 in the past four matches, RCB boast of an envious line-up.Even though West Indian power-hitter Chris Gayle is yet to return since leaving for the birth of a baby girl, AB de Villiers is there to entertain the Rajkot fans. The South African maestro is also in form, hitting 82, 55, 29 and 83 in the past four matches respectively. If you get rid of Kohli and de Villiers, then there are Shane Watson, young Sarfaraz Khan, Mandeep Singh and Stuart Binny who are some of the cleanest hitters of the ball.Watson’s medium pace bowling is raising enough suggestions that the 34-year-old Australian’s nternational retirement was premature as he has picked up six wickets with economical figures.last_img read more
