5 min read Guest Writer While the future legality of recreational cannabis use is hotly debated at both state and federal levels, there is a broad consensus that medical cannabis is a promising, non-toxic treatment for a variety of illnesses. Despite the fact that 33 states and the District of Columbia now permit the use of medical cannabis, and numerous bipartisan bills that would allocate federal funds to research its effect on treating PTSD in veterans, there remains significant obstacles in promoting via TV and digital ads. As government policy increasingly treats medical cannabis as a promising new treatment worth exploring, media companies continue to operate and make decisions based on misinformation that is becoming harder to justify. There is no clearer example of this than CBS’s rejection of a Super Bowl ad from Acreage Holdings that shared real life stories from people who have been treated with medical cannabis. Rather than working with Acreage Holdings to address what was deemed problematic, CBS simply dismissed the ad as inconsistent with policy. For those of us in the industry, the decision was not a surprise, but I am continually baffled by the double-standard (dare I say hypocrisy?) which is on display.Related: Here’s the Medical Cannabis Super Bowl Ad CBS Refused to RunTo be fair, this is not a CBS problem, but a media problem writ large. Cannabis ads, we now know, are forbidden on television and in traditional print outlets. Even Facebook and Google, the two largest online ad platforms, have banned cannabis companies from making ad-buys. In each instance, cannabis ads are deemed inappropriate, all while advertisements for condoms, Viagra, beer, liquor and dozens (if not hundreds) of problematic, highly-addictive prescription drugs flood our screens and televisions.Big Pharma spent $3.7 billion on TV ads in 2018, featuring nearly 200 different commercials for 70 different drugs. These ads ran hundreds of thousands of times. At the same time, Budweiser, Coors and Heineken are staples of broadcast advertising, and since 2012, even hard liquor has been allowed to advertise, albeit during evening hours. The impact is clear: a 2016 study by Rand Corp found that on average, children are exposed to three alcohol advertisements each day; we now know that Big Pharma marketing was a key driver of the opioid crisis; and, Juul relied on digital ads to purposefully target children. The notion that this is about responsibility is simply untrue.Related: Spike Jonze Directed a MedMen Commercial About Cannabis. And It’s Pretty Epic. This all begs the question: what makes medical cannabis “inconsistent” with policies that have, for years, fueled addiction and substance abuse? These marijuana misanthropes typically argue that we don’t need to normalize another substance that could attract new users. This is misleading for two reasons: first, in states that have legalized recreational cannabis, there are no increases in its use or abuse and among pre-teens and teenagers, marijuana use has remained steady and even fallen in some places; and second, the ads in question are focused on medicinal cannabis, something 85 percent of Americans support. Medicinal marijuana is non-lethal and proven effective and it should be allowed to advertise to consumers to ensure they have all options available to them. So long as you are accepting ad dollars from pharmaceutical and alcohol companies, there simply is no valid, rational argument for rejecting an ad explaining the benefits of medicinal cannabis. Not only do these ad bans deprive Americans of important innovations in health care, they further cement the existing stigma and make serious, fact-based discussions increasingly rare. Our young industry already has proven to be far more ethical than the leading sponsors of addiction mentioned above, and proactive in our efforts to market responsibly. We all have taken steps to ensure we do not market to non-users, and work tirelessly to ensure children do not see the ads. That is why some cannabis advertising companies have found alternative routes, such as advertising through geo-targeting tools like AdLink, to ensure that we promote this increasingly legal product in a safe and responsible way. If CBS and others would be willing to work with us, I am certain we will be able to develop self-regulating standards that inform consumers based on fact, not fear.Related: Baby Boomers Smoking Reefer in Record AmountsMedical cannabis has proven effective in reducing symptoms associated with cancer; it can serve as a substitute to opioids for people who suffer from chronic pain as a result of HIV/AIDS; it can improve the appetite of people undergoing chemotherapy; it is even showing promise as an alternative treatment for our veterans suffering from PTSD. The American consumer, long held hostage to the whims of Big Pharma who pump us full of drugs, deserve to know about natural alternative treatments. They deserve to know that synthetic, often times lethal, prescriptions full of side effects are not the only way to treat illnesses. They deserve to know the truth and it is time for the marijuana misanthropes to work with the cannabis community and not against us. Former West Coast Editor Chipotle Mexican Grill says it’s cleaning up its act in the aftermath of several recent foodborne illness-related outbreaks linked to its food.Scrambling to restore consumer confidence, the fast-casual chain announced today that it is taking “aggressive actions” to roll out stricter food safety practices that it claims go above and beyond current industry norms.“We have carefully examined our operations — from the farms that produce our ingredients, to the partners that deliver them to our restaurants, to the cooking techniques used by our restaurant crews — and determined the steps necessary to make the food served at Chipotle as safe as possible,” the company said in a statement.Related: After Numerous Health Incidents, Chipotle Has a Big Perception ProblemSpecifically, some of those steps include: marinating raw chicken in re-sealable plastic bags instead of in bowls; testing chicken and steak more often; scalding several fresh produce items (including onions) in boiling water to sanitize them before being chopped; and blending cilantro into steaming hot rice to kill microbes in the herb, according to the Associated Press. Additionally, some ingredients, including cheese, will be prepped at centralized locations, then delivered to nearby restaurants. (Editor)Oct 11 2018Becoming overweight at a young age can trigger a molecular chain reaction that leads some girls to experience puberty early, according to new research published in Nature Communications.Scientists have discovered a molecular mechanism that leads overweight female rats to have early-onset puberty.”Knowing how nutrition and specific molecules play a role in starting puberty early could one day help physicians prevent the condition in humans,” said one of the study’s corresponding authors, Alejandro Lomniczi, Ph.D., a research assistant professor at OHSU’s Oregon National Primate Research Center.Girls have been experiencing puberty earlier in life for the last 150 years or so, with 12.5 years being the average age girls start puberty today. Early-onset puberty can lead girls to experience health problems later, including increased incidence of ovarian, uterine and breast cancers, as well as being at a higher risk for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.Related StoriesNew research links “broken heart syndrome” to cancerNew therapy shows promise in preventing brain damage after traumatic brain injury”Sexting” amongst teens, numbers not decreasing despite preventive effortsBut the human genome – the complete set of nucleic acid sequences in human DNA – hasn’t changed substantially in the past 150 years. So Lomniczi and colleagues are now exploring if the difference might be due to epigenetics, or changes caused by gene expression rather than changes in the genetic code itself. Gene expression is when genes make functional products such as proteins.Lomniczi’s previous research identified two gene families that keep puberty in check when rodents and nonhuman primates are young. This new study builds on that earlier work by specifically examining how gene expression and body weight are involved in puberty in rats. For this study, the team raised three kinds of female rats: overweight, lean and average-sized. While focusing on the hypothalamus, the bottom part of the brain that controls reproductive development, they found that a puberty-activating gene called Kiss1 was expressed differently in each rat type.Lomniczi and colleagues identified the enzyme SIRT1 in the hypothalamus as being a key player in transmitting body weight information to the brain. In overweight rats, there is less SIRT1 in the hypothalamus, allowing the Kiss1 gene to be expressed earlier, leading the rats to undergo puberty early. In lean rats, SIRT1 is higher for a prolonged period of time, taking longer for Kiss1 gene activation, which delayed puberty in those rats.Lomniczi continues to explore the causes of early-onset puberty through animal model studies. He’s also examining how the circadian clock and endocrine disruptors might play a role.

Widespread violence from armed militias continues to wreak havoc on the affected region, stifling contact tracing and vaccination efforts and putting healthcare workers at enormous risk. In addition to Ebola spreading to the rest of the country, the WHO states that there is a “very high” risk of the virus spreading to bordering nations Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan. Most recently, the government used the virus as a reason to prevent over 1 million people living in the affected areas from voting in the Dec. 30 elections. This caused violent protests and attacks on Ebola treatment facilities that forced aid groups to suspend operations for days and required patients awaiting test results to be moved to alternate locations. The findings can inform efforts to improve an individual’s sense of control, which has ramifications for physical, mental and emotional health.”We found that sleep, mood and stress are all important factors in determining a sense of control and in whether older adults feel they can do the things they want to do,” says Shevaun Neupert, a professor of psychology at NC State and co-author of a paper on the work. “This finding is important because when older adults begin to lose their sense of autonomy, it can lead to changes in behavior that adversely affect their health and well-being.”Related StoriesPink noise enhances deep sleep for people with mild cognitive impairmentSleep quality could be indicator for later Alzheimer’s disease finds studySleep disorders in patients with low back pain linked to increased healthcare visits, costsFor this study, researchers evaluated data on 205 people between the ages of 60 and 94. Study participants provided information on a wide range of psychological variables on eight days across a period of three weeks. The researchers focused on determining which variables, if any, had an effect on two “control beliefs”: perceived competence, or an individual’s sense that her or she could do the things they wanted to do; and locus of control, or sense that they were in control of their own lives. The researchers found that several variables have a significant effect on both beliefs.”We found that sleep efficacy – or the belief that one can get a good night’s sleep – was associated with better control beliefs,” Neupert says.”We also found that positive affect was good for an individual’s control beliefs, while negative affect was bad,” says Shenghao Zhang, a Ph.D. student at NC State and first author of the paper. “In other words, being in a good mood made people feel better about their competence and control, while being in a bad mood made people feel worse about those things.”Lastly, we found that stressful events on one day had an adverse effect on an individual’s subsequent control beliefs,” Zhang says. “These results suggest that the adverse effect of stressful events can last for more than a day. It would be interesting to conduct additional work to determine how long the effects of stress resonate in regard to control beliefs.””We know there are things people can do to improve their mood and to improve their sleep,” Neupert says. “And while sleep and mood are things most people think are important, this study highlights a very specific reason that they are important.”When people think they have little or no control in their lives, they may stop doing some of the everyday things that are important for self-care – because they believe those things don’t matter,” Neupert says. “By acting to improve mood and sleep, older adults may better retain their sense of control and better maintain their quality of life.” Source:https://news.ncsu.edu/2019/01/sleep-mood-affect-how-in-control-older-adults-feel/

Citation: Putting the ‘smart’ in manufacturing (2018, April 6) retrieved 18 July 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2018-04-smart.html Explore further Provided by University of Wisconsin-Madison That’s what she hopes to change with a research idea she first published almost two decades ago.During the past 16 years, Shi has visited more than 400 manufacturing companies in the United States, China, Europe, and Japan to personally observe their production processes. “And I have used that insight to develop tools that can make these processes run much more smoothly,” she says. These tools are based on the notion of a “digital twin,” or a computer representation of physical assets (machines and people) and processes that helps managers better operate the systems that connect them.Take, for example, a car manufacturing company with 15 different suppliers, each of which delivers a specific car part. As these parts arrive at the company, they are assembled by people who work in different departments, such as sheet metal cutting, heat treatment, welding, painting and so forth. The overall goal of this manufacturing system is to fill a set number of vehicle sales orders. That’s a classic example of a supply chain: a set of processes that link raw source materials to final consumer products.A company’s goal for making supply chain manufacturing more efficient might include decreasing production downtime due to delivery delays for required parts, and better adjusting to unpredictable events, such as rush orders, machine breakdowns, or defective parts. The technology Shi has developed helps managers meet these goals. With a database system, user software and equipment sensors, it creates a digital twin of what is physically happening at the supply facilities and shop floors. Managers can use that digital representation to visually track the global production progress in real time and adjust workflows as needed. The tool provides continuously updated start times for each assembly stage and constantly refined delivery times for the customers who ordered the cars.”That’s what we mean by smart manufacturing,” Shi says. The technology is helpful for all industries, but is especially important in custom manufacturing. Unlike mass production companies, custom manufacturers typically receive a lower number of highly customized (and more expensive) sales orders and may also experience wilder market swings. This high variability in demand makes planning challenging, and the ability to respond quickly and efficiently to individual orders becomes a critical part of the business model. At the heart of Shi’s technology is a mathematical algorithm she originally published as a research paper in 2000, followed by a book on the subject eight years later. Although the methodology, known as nested partitioning, is not new, its implementation is only now becoming feasible. It relies on ultra-fast computers and wireless technology that connects machines, devices, and people to the internet and to each other: the Internet of Things. To help translate her research into practical applications, Shi formed a spinoff company, LS Optimal, in 1995. Initially conceived for consulting purposes only, it now has several full-time employees in the United States who help industry clients develop and implement smart manufacturing processes.”It was a long time coming, but we’re finally seeing a real paradigm shift in the industry,” Shi says. “By giving manufacturing companies the ability to track the progress of their sales orders in real time and manage their shop floors proactively, they can deliver high-quality products to their customers much faster than before.” Ng aims to bring AI ‘electricity’ to manufacturing “Although smartphones and tablets are ubiquitous, many of the companies that make our everyday consumer products still rely on paper trails and manually updated spreadsheets to keep track of their production processes and delivery schedules,” says Leyuan Shi, a professor of industrial and systems engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Eight-eyed huntsman spiders in the Sparassidae family deliver venomous bites with their sharp fangs, paralyzing small prey. Credit: Courtesy of Justine Latton In Australia — where else? — a large spider recently demonstrated the dominance of arachnids over puny mammals, as it chowed down on an unfortunate pygmy possum. Southern Tasmania resident Justine Latton shared her husband’s photos of the gruesome meal on June 14 in the Facebook group Tasmanian Insects and Spiders. He captured the images at a lodge in Tasmania’s Mount Field National Park while doing light repair work, Latton said yesterday (June 18) on the radio program “Tasmania Talks.” Members of the Facebook group identified the arachnid as a huntsman (also known as a giant crab spider); these large, long-legged spiders in the Sparassidae family live all over Australia. In the photo, the huntsman hangs head-down from a door hinge and grips its prey by the neck. The dead marsupial — which appears to be a pygmy possum, according to commenters — dangles limply from the huntsman’s mandibles. [In Photos: A Tarantula-Eat-Snake World] The animal commonly known as a possum in North America (actually an “opossum,” which belongs to a different order) can grow to be as big as a cat; were that the case here, the spider would easily be the size of a large dinner plate. But pygmy possums (Cercartetus lepidus) are the smallest possums in the world, measuring about 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7 centimeters) long and weighing about 0.2 ounces (7 grams), according to Tasmania’s Parks and Wildlife Service. On average, a huntsman spider’s leg span can reach up to 6 inches (15 cm), while their bodies measure about 0.7 inches (2 cm) long, the Australian Museum reported. Huntsman spiders are ambush predators, and they use their large and powerful fangs to deliver venomous bites. Spiders are commonly thought to suck the liquids from their prey; in reality, they vomit digestive fluid onto their meals, chew the saturated flesh and then slurp up the dissolved nutrients, Rod Crawford, curatorial associate of arachnids at the Burke Museum in Seattle, wrote on the museum website. Huntsman spiders’ usual prey includes many types of insects, reptiles and even other spiders. But it shouldn’t come as a surprise that small mammals are also occasionally on the menu. Numerous spider species worldwide are known to eat bats, and researchers recently recorded the first evidence of tropical spiders preying on mouse opossums, in the Peruvian Amazon, Live Science previously reported. The plants of 10 million litres per day (MLD) each are being planned at Triplicane, MRC Nagar, and Kasimedu.Industry sources said that to construct a 10 MLD desalination plant in the city, it would cost around ₹140 crore. The three plants will cost over ₹420 crore. The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, in a Request for Interest, has asked companies to conduct pre-feasibility studies, and draw up Detailed Project Reports for the construction and commissioning of the desalination plants. The project includes erection of intake and outfall arrangements and integration with existing water supply network, operation and maintenance of the plants for five years.Chennai’s total water requirement is 830 MLD. Chennai Metrowater currently supplies about 525 MLD through various sources such as groundwater, reservoirs and desalination plants. This leaves a deficit of around 300 MLD. Water supply to South Chennai is met from Veeranam lake and Nemmeli Seawater Desalination Plant, said a senior Chennai Metrowater official. Chennai Metrowater had set up a 100 MLD capacity seawater desalination plant at Nemmeli in 2013.Last week, Tamil Nadu sought a financial support of ₹5,398 crore from the Centre for combined water supply projects across the State. The projects include desalination plant and connected pipeline works with a designed capacity of 100 MLD to Villupuram and Tindivanam municipalities; Marakkanam and Vikkaravandi town panchayats, and 1,601 rural habitations in ten panchayat unions of Villupuram district. The total project cost is around ₹2,000 crore and expected to benefit 16.78 lakh people. For the Chennai Metropolitan area, two major desalination projects at an estimated cost of ₹7,337.78 crore to supply 550 MLD of water have been taken up and both these projects are expected to be completed by December 2022, says a memorandum presented by SP Velumani, State Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development and Implementation of Special Programme, to Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister for Jal Shakti, seeking financial assistance.
