How Doubledown DoubleDipped

first_imgEarlier this week, FOLIO: reported that Doubledown Media, the publisher of magazines aimed at the Wall Street elite, has ceased operations. This morning, as I was scanning the newsstand, I came across a couple remnants of the once-rising enterprise—and was seeing double. Literally.Side-by-side, the November/December issue of Doubledown’s Trader Monthly and the December/January issue of Dealmaker are nearly identical. The cover subjects—Dean Smith and Wray Thorn, respectively—are posed and photographed the same way. The coverlines are near mirror images of each other.Flipping through, I found—wait, yes—identical feature stories. Word for word. Page for page. With little in the way of design changes. Admittedly, I was not a subscriber to Doubledown’s magazines, so I don’t know if this happened often or was an isolated incident. While I understand that Trader Monthly and Dealmaker had similar readerships (and advertisers) there is no excuse for such blatant, lazy sharing of copy.last_img read more

French Green Goblin will try to fly from France to England again

France’s authorities wouldn’t allow that for last Thursday’s attempt.Last week’s attempt was timed to mark the 110th anniversary of the first aerial crossing of the channel. Louis Bleriot’s 1909 trip took 37 minutes.Unsurprisingly, the internet continued its comparisons to the Marvel Comics villain.  Zapata’s company website notes that the Flyboard Air isn’t available for recreational use and would require 100 hours of training on its water variant if it were. So you can’t become Green Goblin anytime soon. It’ll probably take at least two sequels.First published July 25 at 2:51 a.m. PT.Updated July 31 at 4:55 a.m. PT: Adds that Zapata will try again on Sunday. We’ll meet again, Spider-Man. On Sunday, as it turns out. Jack Chan/Xinhua via Getty Franky Zapata, the French inventor who looked a whole lot like Spider-Man archnemesis Green Goblin as he flew a hoverboard through Paris during June’s Bastille Day celebrations, took an unsuccessful first shot at flying across the English Channel last Thursday, and he’ll try again this Sunday. In his previous attempt, he took off near Calais, France, on his invention — the turbine engine-powered Flyboard Air — and flew across the channel toward St. Margaret’s Bay in Dover, England. He planned to make the 22-mile journey in around 20 minutes, with a quick stop on a boat to refill his power pack with kerosene, the Associated Press noted.Unfortunately, he fell into the water when he tried to land on a boat for refueling. His wife, Christelle, told the AP that the waves moved the landing platform too much. Zapata wasn’t injured in the fall, and French divers rescued him quickly. last_img read more

What is the G20

first_imgRussia`s President Vladimir Putin (L) welcomes Chinese President Xi Jinping (R) during their meeting on July 4, 2017 at the Kremlin in Moscow, as part of Jinping`s two-day visit to Moscow. AFPThe Group of 20 leading industrialised and emerging powers hold annual summits on economic governance, with wars and crises often overtaking the official agenda.Grouping the United States and other G7 members with giants such as China, India and Russia, it represents two thirds of the world population, three quarters of world trade and about 80 percent of economic output. The other members are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey and the European Union. The G20, with its ministerial-level beginnings in 1999, first met for a summit in 2008 in Washington to discuss ways to achieve balanced and sustainable world economic growth.Critics charge that the “self-appointed” club undermines the role of the international bodies, such the United Nations, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank. The grouping has often been a magnet for protesters, including at this year’s meet in Hamburg, Germany. At the 2010 summit in Toronto, thousands of anti-capitalist protesters clashed with Canadian police, leaving dozens injured on both sides and sparking mass arrests. The list of G20 members does not strictly reflect the world’s 20 biggest economies. Some non-members such as Switzerland have bigger economies than, for example, member Argentina. The leaders mostly meet behind closed doors and lack the power to enforce binding decisions or rules. The heads of global and regional bodies are invited to the summits — among them the chiefs of the UN, IMF, World Bank, WTO, African Union, APEC and Southeast Asia’s ASEAN.Rotating G20 summits also invite guest nations, including “permanent guest” Spain and, this year, partner countries the Netherlands, Norway and Singapore.Next year’s G20 host will be Argentina.last_img

Harris County Receives 44Million In Grants To Address Sex Traffickers

first_img Share Brien Straw | Houston Public MediaHarris County Sheriff Ed GonzalezHarris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced Monday a $4.4-million in grants from the Texas Governor’s Office to assist victims of violent crime and combat sex traffickers. The money will also help change the way prosecutors address the problem.About one-million will be used to go after sex traffickers, while the remaining funds will be used to assist victims of violent crimes. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez is putting those in the sex trafficking business on notice. “To all the offenders and predators out there, we’re going to continue to increase our resources, continue to build our collective efforts. And in Harris County we’re going to send a strong message, if you haven’t been caught yet, you will be caught. It’s just a matter of time,” said Gonzalez.Houston leads the nation in calls to the national trafficking assistance hotline, but Andrea Sparks, Director of the Child Sex Trafficking Team for Governor Greg Abbott, is hoping the grant money will change the narrative.“Let’s make it the number one city in trauma informed response to its victims,” she said. The number of staff able to assist victims will almost double thanks to the four grants, but according to Ogg, equally important is a shift to treating the women involved, into victims.“From putting prostitutes in jail over and over and over, to now focusing on the marketplace and their buyers, and more importantly their human traffickers, it’s not revolutionary but it really is a new era,” Ogg said.last_img read more
