The Marijuana Advertising Double Standard Is Stifling Our Industry

first_img 5 min read Guest Writer While the future legality of recreational cannabis use is hotly debated at both state and federal levels, there is a broad consensus that medical cannabis is a promising, non-toxic treatment for a variety of illnesses. Despite the fact that 33 states and the District of Columbia now permit the use of medical cannabis, and numerous bipartisan bills that would allocate federal funds to research its effect on treating PTSD in veterans, there remains significant obstacles in promoting via TV and digital ads. As government policy increasingly treats medical cannabis as a promising new treatment worth exploring, media companies continue to operate and make decisions based on misinformation that is becoming harder to justify.There is no clearer example of this than CBS’s rejection of a Super Bowl ad from Acreage Holdings that shared real life stories from people who have been treated with medical cannabis. Rather than working with Acreage Holdings to address what was deemed problematic, CBS simply dismissed the ad as inconsistent with policy. For those of us in the industry, the decision was not a surprise, but I am continually baffled by the double-standard (dare I say hypocrisy?) which is on display.Related: Here’s the Medical Cannabis Super Bowl Ad CBS Refused to RunTo be fair, this is not a CBS problem, but a media problem writ large. Cannabis ads, we now know, are forbidden on television and in traditional print outlets. Even Facebook and Google, the two largest online ad platforms, have banned cannabis companies from making ad-buys. In each instance, cannabis ads are deemed inappropriate, all while advertisements for condoms, Viagra, beer, liquor and dozens (if not hundreds) of problematic, highly-addictive prescription drugs flood our screens and televisions.Big Pharma spent $3.7 billion on TV ads in 2018, featuring nearly 200 different commercials for 70 different drugs. These ads ran hundreds of thousands of times. At the same time, Budweiser, Coors and Heineken are staples of broadcast advertising, and since 2012, even hard liquor has been allowed to advertise, albeit during evening hours. The impact is clear: a 2016 study by Rand Corp found that on average, children are exposed to three alcohol advertisements each day; we now know that Big Pharma marketing was a key driver of the opioid crisis; and, Juul relied on digital ads to purposefully target children. And It’s Pretty Epic.This all begs the question: what makes medical cannabis “inconsistent” with policies that have, for years, fueled addiction and substance abuse? These marijuana misanthropes typically argue that we don’t need to normalize another substance that could attract new users. This is misleading for two reasons: first, in states that have legalized recreational cannabis, there are no increases in its use or abuse and among pre-teens and teenagers, marijuana use has remained steady and even fallen in some places; and second, the ads in question are focused on medicinal cannabis, something 85 percent of Americans support. Medicinal marijuana is non-lethal and proven effective and it should be allowed to advertise to consumers to ensure they have all options available to them. So long as you are accepting ad dollars from pharmaceutical and alcohol companies, there simply is no valid, rational argument for rejecting an ad explaining the benefits of medicinal cannabis.Not only do these ad bans deprive Americans of important innovations in health care, they further cement the existing stigma and make serious, fact-based discussions increasingly rare. Our young industry already has proven to be far more ethical than the leading sponsors of addiction mentioned above, and proactive in our efforts to market responsibly. We all have taken steps to ensure we do not market to non-users, and work tirelessly to ensure children do not see the ads. That is why some cannabis advertising companies have found alternative routes, such as advertising through geo-targeting tools like AdLink, to ensure that we promote this increasingly legal product in a safe and responsible way. If CBS and others would be willing to work with us, I am certain we will be able to develop self-regulating standards that inform consumers based on fact, not fear.Related: Baby Boomers Smoking Reefer in Record AmountsMedical cannabis has proven effective in reducing symptoms associated with cancer; it can serve as a substitute to opioids for people who suffer from chronic pain as a result of HIV/AIDS; it can improve the appetite of people undergoing chemotherapy; it is even showing promise as an alternative treatment for our veterans suffering from PTSD. The American consumer, long held hostage to the whims of Big Pharma who pump us full of drugs, deserve to know about natural alternative treatments. They deserve to know that synthetic, often times lethal, prescriptions full of side effects are not the only way to treat illnesses. They deserve to know the truth and it is time for the marijuana misanthropes to work with the cannabis community and not against us. Chipotle Cooks Up New Stricter Food Safety Rules Amid E Coli Fiasco

first_img Former West Coast Editor Chipotle Mexican Grill says it’s cleaning up its act in the aftermath of several recent foodborne illness-related outbreaks linked to its food.Scrambling to restore consumer confidence, the fast-casual chain announced today that it is taking “aggressive actions” to roll out stricter food safety practices that it claims go above and beyond current industry norms.“We have carefully examined our operations — from the farms that produce our ingredients, to the partners that deliver them to our restaurants, to the cooking techniques used by our restaurant crews — and determined the steps necessary to make the food served at Chipotle as safe as possible,” the company said in a statement.Related: After Numerous Health Incidents, Chipotle Has a Big Perception ProblemSpecifically, some of those steps include: marinating raw chicken in re-sealable plastic bags instead of in bowls; testing chicken and steak more often; scalding several fresh produce items (including onions) in boiling water to sanitize them before being chopped; and blending cilantro into steaming hot rice to kill microbes in the herb, according to the Associated Press. Additionally, some ingredients, including cheese, will be prepped at centralized locations, then delivered to nearby restaurants. It has lost two large contracts since the year end.Finsbury estimates the costs associated with the closure could reach up to £10 million, spread over a period of up to seven years.Grain D’Or was acquired as part of Finsbury’s takeover of the Fletcher Group of bakeries in 2014, but it has been struggling due to an ‘environment which creates strong competition for contracts and loss-leading prices’.Finsbury Food Group said in a release: “Finsbury’s recent statements for the full year to June 2017 demonstrated its resilience in a challenging market. New Solar Panels Use Waste Heat to Purify Water

However, many of these regions also have limited access to clean water. A new type of solar power setup developed at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia could address both of those issues. These panels leverage waste heat from solar panels to distill and purify water. The researchers used salt water to test the technology, but it should work equally well on fresh water that simply isn’t fit for human consumption. The solar panels sit on top of a multi-layer box where they can absorb sunlight and generate power. Below that is a three-stage distillation unit. There’s nothing particularly special about the solar panels used in the system. About 10 percent of the sunlight hitting the photovoltaic cells goes toward generating power. While much higher efficiencies have been demonstrated in the lab, most commercial cells are only a little more efficient. However, those panels aren’t also generating water. As the panels pull in solar radiation to make power, some of the energy radiates out as waste heat. The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology design directs that heat down into the first layer of water purification. It heats seawater, causing it to evaporate and re-condense as clean, fresh water. The heat generated by the first layer passes through a membrane into the second distillation layer where it purifies more water, and it’s the same for the third (bottom) layer. It’s essentially a very fancy stacked solar still — the researchers note the solar panel design purified three times as much water as a solar still, and you get electricity, too. According to the team, water passed through the device comes out safe for drinking by all measurable standards. The levels of lead, copper, sodium, calcium, and magnesium after filtration are all below the thresholds set by the World Health Organization. You might be able to deploy a more efficient solar power farm and water purification rig as separate systems, but the system developed by these researchers could be a major breakthrough because it can do both at the same time. The team sees this as an ideal solution for remote areas where people have limited power and ample access to undrinkable water. How Does Quantum Computing Work

Quantum computing just plain sounds cool. We’ve all read about the massive investment in making it a reality, and its promise of breakthroughs in many industries. But all that press is usually short on what it is and how it works. That’s for a reason: Quantum computing is quite different from traditional digital computing and requires thinking about things in a non-intuitive way. Oh, and there is math. Lots of it.This article won’t make you an expert, but it should help you understand what quantum computing is, why it’s important, and why it’s so exciting. If you already have a background in quantum mechanics and grad school math, you probably don’t need to read this article. You can jump straight into a book like A Gentle Introduction To Quantum Computing (Hint, “gentle” is a relative term). But if you’re like most of us and don’t have that background, let’s do our best to demystify one of the most mystical topics in computing.Quantum Computing ConceptsIn a few short paragraphs, here are the basics that we’ll go over in more detail in this article: Quantum computers use qubits instead of traditional bits (binary digits). Qubits are different from traditional bits because until they are read out (meaning measured), they can exist in an indeterminate state where we can’t tell whether they’ll be measured as a 0 or a 1. That’s because of a unique property called superposition.Superposition makes qubits interesting, but their real superpower is entanglement. Entangled qubits can interact instantly. To make functional qubits, quantum computers have to be cooled to near absolute zero. Even when supercooled, qubits don’t maintain their entangled state (coherence) for very long.That makes programming them extra tricky. Quantum computers are programmed using sequences of logic gates of various kinds, but programs need to run quickly enough that the qubits don’t lose coherence before they’re measured. For anyone who took a logic class or digital circuit design using flip-flops, quantum logic gates will seem somewhat familiar, although quantum computers themselves are essentially analog. However, the combination of superposition and entanglement make the process about a hundred times more confusing.Qubits and SuperpositionThe ordinary bits we use in typical digital computers are either 0 or 1. You can read them whenever you want, and unless there is a flaw in the hardware, they won’t change. Qubits aren’t like that. They have a probability of being 0 and a probability of being 1, but until you measure them, they may be in an indefinite state. That state, along with some other state information that allows for additional computational complexity, can be described as being at an arbitrary point on a sphere (of radius 1), that reflects both the probability of being measured as a 0 or 1 (which are the north and south poles).The qubit’s state is a combination of the values along all three axes. This is called superposition. Some texts describe this property as “being in all possible states at the same time,” while others think that’s somewhat misleading and that we’re better off sticking with the probability explanation. Either way, a quantum computer can actually do math on the qubit while it is in superposition — changing the probabilities in various ways through logic gates — before eventually reading out a result by measuring it. In all cases, though, once a qubit is read, it is either 1 or 0 and loses its other state information.Qubits typically start life at 0, although they are often then moved into an indeterminate state using a Hadamard Gate, which results in a qubit that will read out as 0 half the time and 1 the other half. Other gates are available to flip the state of a qubit by varying amounts and directions — both relative to the 0 and 1 axes, and also a third axis that represents phase, and provides additional possibilities for representing information. The specific operations and gates available depend on the quantum computer and toolkit you’re using.Entanglement: Where the Action IsGroups of independent qubits, by themselves, aren’t enough to create the massive breakthroughs that are promised by quantum computing. The magic really starts to happen when the quantum physics concept of entanglement is implemented. One industry expert likened qubits without entanglement as being a “very expensive classical computer.” Entangled qubits affect each other instantly when measured, no matter far apart they are, based on what Einstein euphemistically called “spooky action at a distance.” In terms of classic computing, this is a bit like having a logic gate connecting every bit in memory to every other bit.You can start to see how powerful that might be compared with a traditional computer needing to read and write from each element of memory separately before operating on it. As a result, there are multiple large potential gains from entanglement. The first is a huge increase in the complexity of programming that can be executed, at least for certain types of problems. One that’s creating a lot of excitement is the modeling of complex molecules and materials that are very difficult to simulate with classical computers. Another might be innovations in long-distance secure communications — if and when it becomes possible to preserve quantum state over large distances. Programming using entanglement typically starts with the C-NOT gate, which flips the state of an entangled particle if its partner is read out as a 1. This is sort of like a traditional XOR gate, except that it only operates when a measurement is made.Quantum Algorithms Will Change CryptographySuperposition and entanglement are impressive physical phenomena, but leveraging them to do computation requires a very different mindset and programming model. You can’t simply throw your C code on a quantum computer and expect it to run, and certainly not to run faster. Fortunately, mathematicians and physicists are way ahead of the computer builders here, having developed clever algorithms that take advantage of quantum computers decades before the machines started to appear.Some of the first quantum algorithms created, and honestly, some of the few useful ones I’ve found that you can understand without a graduate degree in math, are for secure cryptographic key distribution. These algorithms use the property of entanglement to allow the key creator to send one of each of many pairs of qubits to the recipient. The full explanation is pretty long, but the algorithms rely on the fact that if anyone intercepts and reads one of the entangled bits en route, the companion qubit at the sender will be affected. By passing some statistics back and forth, the sender and receiver can figure out whether the key was transmitted securely, or was hacked on the way.You may have read that quantum computers one day could break most current cryptography systems. They will be able to do that because there are some very clever algorithms designed to run on quantum computers that can solve a hard math problem, which in turn can be used to factor very large numbers. One of the most famous is Shor’s Factoring Algorithm. The difficulty of factoring large numbers is essential to the security of all public-private key systems — which are the most commonly used today. Current quantum computers don’t have nearly enough qubits to attempt the task, but various experts predict they will within the next 3-8 years. That leads to some potentially dangerous situations, such as if only governments and the super-rich had access to the ultra-secure encryption provided by quantum computers.Why Building Quantum Computers Is HardThere are plenty of reasons quantum computers are taking a long time to develop. For starters, you need to find a way to isolate and control a physical object that implements a qubit. That also requires cooling it down to essentially zero (as in .015 degrees Kelvin, in the case of IBM‘s Quantum One). Even at such a low temperature, qubits are only stable (retaining coherence) for a very short time. That greatly limits the flexibility of programmers in how many operations they can perform before needing to read out a result.Not only do programs need to be constrained, but they need to be run many times, as current qubit implementations have a high error rate. Additionally, entanglement isn’t easy to implement in hardware either. In many designs, only some of the qubits are entangled, so the compiler needs to be smart enough to swap bits around as needed to help simulate a system where all the bits can potentially be entangled.Getting Started With Quantum ComputingThe good news is that trivial quantum computing programs are actually pretty easy to understand if a bit confusing at first. Plenty of tutorials are available that will help you write your first quantum program, as well as let you run it on a simulator, and possibly even on a real quantum computer.One of the best places to start is with IBM’s QISKit, a free quantum toolkit from IBM Q Research that includes a visual composer, a simulator, and access to an actual IBM quantum computer after you have your code running on the simulator. Rigetti Quantum Computing has also posted an easy intro application, which relies on their toolkit and can be run on their machines in the cloud.Unfortunately, the trivial applications are just that: trivial. So simply following along with the code in each example doesn’t really help you master the intricacies of more sophisticated quantum algorithms. You can see CBS’s coverage now on YouTube, showcasing not just what happened, but how it happened. It’s the same way you, your parents, or your grandparents saw the event.I am admittedly not much for watching video. I use YouTube almost exclusively for listening to music when I use it at all. But there’s something fascinating about seeing the real-time broadcast, complete with commercials and with breaking news coverage of then-current events happening in… well, not “real-time” obviously, but what real-time looked like 50 years ago. The original launch occurred at 9:32 AM on July 16, 1969, with the later lunar touchdown on July 20. Armstrong actually stepped out on the lunar surface six hours later.Watching the full live stream is fascinating for another reason — it highlights the degree to which both the takeoff and landing were extended, live affairs, carried out over hours with extensive footage. The idea that the moon landing was some kind of hoax carried out by Stanley Kubrick or through some other form of visual effects wizardry has been debunked more times (and from more angles) than I can think of. But one of the better treatments of the topic is by S. G. Collins of Postwar Media.Collins details in the video above why the special effects technology of the 1960s literally wasn’t capable of this kind of feat. Both launches and landings were live broadcasts that went on for hours and were seen by millions of people worldwide. Fifty years ago, it was an entirely different matter.I hadn’t planned on watching any of the moon landing details this weekend, but after watching some of the Apollo 11 launch broadcast I may change that plan. Seeing the moon landing lift-off sent chills up my spine, grainy video and bad color reproduction be damned. Seeing the Saturn V in action is a joy, blurry video and all.It is unfortunate that the triumph of Apollo 11 and the following Apollo missions remain the last time we have sent humans to another world beyond our own. I do not know if I’ll be around when the 100th anniversary of Apollo rolls around, but I hope that by the time we hit the 75th — and I do hope to be around for that one — we’ll be able to say that we eventually exceeded the achievements of my grandfather’s generation. “We came in peace for all mankind” is too good of a slogan to leave it isolated and alone on the lunar surface. There are further worlds, farther worlds, to explore. This has been known since before 5G launched. It’s a limiting factor for where the technology can be deployed. But now, new reports show that 5G has an even more implacable foe: summer.According to reports from both The Wall Street Journal and PCMag, the current bare handful of 5G devices available to consumers literally wilt and die if you attempt to use them in hot weather. PCMag’s Sascha Segan writes:On a hot Las Vegas morning, my two Galaxy S10 5G phones kept overheating and dropping to 4G. This behavior is happening with all of the millimeter-wave, first-generation, Qualcomm X50-based phones when temperatures hit or exceed 85 degrees. We saw it with T-Mobile in New York, with Verizon in Providence, and now with AT&T in Las Vegas. It’s happened on Samsung and LG phones, with Samsung, Ericsson, and Nokia network hardware.The WSJ is even more stark. Joanna Stern writes:The Samsung Galaxy S10 5G isn’t reliable in the summer—unless, well, you summer in Iceland.When I ran tests, the phone’s 5G often switched off due to overheating, leaving me with a 4G connection. Cellular carriers demo-ing or testing the phone have taken to cooling the devices with ice packs and air conditioners.Here, for reference, is a map of US temperatures today.Map by the Washington Post.The situation is awe-inspiring. We already knew that millimeter-wave 5G came with a laundry list of conditions and must-haves to ensure good performance, but I admit, it never occurred to me that the companies that drew up and developed the standard would deploy it in products that can’t deal with the reality of sunlight. Admittedly, that’s because I thought deploying a network technology that degrades when there’s a lot of water vapor in the air was a bad enough idea that obviously there couldn’t be anything worse waiting in the wings, right?Right?Wrong.PCMag goes on to say: “AT&T being AT&T, the company leaves the ‘5G+’ indicator on the phone even when it’s dropped to 4G from overheating.”This is both the most enraging and the least surprising thing ever.Samsung’s response to this problem, according to the WSJ? “As 5G technology and the ecosystem evolve, it’s only going to get better.”Yeah. So let’s talk about that. First of all, one device that probably isn’t going to “get better” is the Samsung Galaxy 10 5G. Later products with different modems could be better, but the hardware in a first-generation phone is going to be what it’s going to be, and the chances of a firmware update that miraculously improves things is limited. If AT&T, Verizon, Samsung, LG, and the other companies making these products had such an update in their back pocket, it’d be splashed as news all over these stories in the first place. The message would be something like: “Current 5G devices overheat easily, but carriers and manufacturers promise that fixes are coming.”There has been no such messaging.Stern appears to have tested her 5G speeds by downloading files from Netflix, which is a pretty reasonable way to do it. Her download time on 5G for an episode of Stranger Things S3 was listed ~34 seconds. Keep that in mind as you read this:In Atlanta, where it was 90 degrees the day I visited, I could run only one or two 5G download tests before the phone would overheat and switch to 4G. When that happened, I’d head back to the car and hold the phone to the air vent. In Chicago, another day in the 90s, I had to wait until the sun went down to finish my Netflix download tests. In New York on an 83-degree day, I went with the ice-cooler trick: A minute or two in the cooler, and 5G switches back on.The Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, a $1,300 device, is capable of running a max-speed connection for less than a minute (somewhere between 33 and 66 seconds) when temperatures break 85F.One expects spotty connections and lower overall performance from first-generation networks and products. One does not expect the product to catastrophically fail when encountering the reality of outside ambient temperature., particularly when the only way to get good 5G performance is to stand so close to the antenna people think you’re dating.Will This Improve?To an extent, yes. There’s probably additional tuning that can be done to improve modem power consumption, but Qualcomm has told us for years that die shrinks provide only limited power consumption improvement for modems. Samsung, Apple, and other companies can perform advanced thermal analysis to see exactly where hot spots pop up and devise strategies to mitigate them, ranging from better internal cooling solutions to thicker chassis or better thermal interface materials. It’s unlikely we’ve reached the point where people start sticking fans in smartphones on the regular, but even a very small fan would likely fix this problem (at the cost of thickness, a bit of noise, and a little power).In the past, we’ve seen discussions of using wax to quickly move heat in an enclosed area. Clearly, a bunch of designers have had ideas before about how one might deal with this issue. Beam-forming and other carrier technologies could also wind up reducing the amount of power that 5G signals require, thereby reducing device power draw.But make no mistake. 5G signaling is going to require more power, and in today’s downright anorexic devices, that’s obviously already creating thermal problems. At the very least, this is one more limit on a 5G rollout that didn’t need more limits.We’ve said before that 5G is very early and that people probably shouldn’t buy into it, but this issue seals the deal for me. I would never recommend that anyone buy a product whose premiere feature is likely to be unavailable when outside in the summer.
